History of Newtown Manor
Newtown Manor, located near Leonardtown in St. Mary’s County, was one of the Jesuits’ most significant Maryland estates. Established in the 17th century, it typically held between 50 and 70 enslaved people who cultivated tobacco, corn, and wheat. Enslaved labor at Newtown directly supported Jesuit schools, churches, and Georgetown College. Many families from this plantation were included in the 1838 sale to Louisiana.
