- An abolitionist was a person who actively opposed slavery and worked to end the institution of slavery in the United States and other parts of the world. Abolitionists came from various backgrounds, including free African Americans, formerly enslaved individuals, religious leaders, writers, politicians, and activists. Their methods ranged from peaceful advocacy to direct action, including helping enslaved people escape.
