Roblin Roll
1852 - 1852

The Roblin Roll was created in 1852 as a census-like record documenting Métis and Cree Peoples in the Red River Settlement (modern-day Manitoba, Canada). It was compiled to identify families eligible for land claims and scrip payments during negotiations between the Métis Nation and the Canadian government.
- The Métis people are of mixed Indigenous and European ancestry, primarily descendants of First Nations women and French, Scottish, or English fur traders.
- By the mid-19th century, tensions over land ownership, governance, and settlement rights in the Red River area led to negotiations between the Métis and colonial authorities.
- The Roblin Roll served as an early tool to document Métis landholders and their families, forming the basis for later compensation and settlement policies.
