History of St. Inigoes
Founded in the mid-1600s, St. Inigoes was one of the oldest Jesuit estates in North America. By the 19th century, it had the largest enslaved population of the Maryland Jesuits, often numbering between 80 and 100 individuals. They produced tobacco, wheat, and other crops that sustained Jesuit missions. In 1838, many enslaved families from St. Inigoes were sold and transported to Louisiana.
